Former star quarterback Drew Bledsoe, like his former first-round-pick partner, Rick Mirer, is making some wine.
The two, who were the first- and second-round picks in the 1993 NFL draft, have been interested in the wine business for years, reports CNBC. Originally, Mirer introduced Bledsoe to wine back in their early NFL days. Later, that blossomed into family trips to California’s Napa Valley wine region and a growing involvement by Mirer in the wine business.
In 2008 Mirer, having retired several years before, opened Mirror Wine with a run of 500 cases. Even at a price-point of $75 or more per bottle, that run increased to 1,000 cases quickly. He hopes to increase that up to 3,000 cases eventually.
Bledsoe, too, got interested in the industry and says he had decided that winemaking would be his second career even before he retired. He now owns 130 acres of land near his home of Walla Walla, Wash., and is making hundreds of cases per year. Like Mirer, he hopes to get that up to about 3,000 cases over time.
