The films, which will be released beginning in 2014, will feature characters from LeapFrog’s Letter Factory videos, including Leap, Lily and Tad. The movies will be geared toward providing a mix of education and entertainment, the companies said in a press release.
As part of an existing partnership, LeapFrog and Lions Gate have released 12 animated DVDs since 2008. The videos teach small children about math, science, technology, phonics and vocabulary.
Under terms of the new agreement, Lions Gate will also promote the development of other new LeapFrog content. The film studio has extended its distribution deal for LeapFrog DVDs.
LeapFrog will retain the rights to provide content through its own digital distribution channels. The four films covered by the partnership will appear on DVD and in formats compatible with digital distribution.
Shares of LeapFrog rose about 1% in Monday morning trading, while Lions Gate shares slipped fractionally.
