N.Y. Nun Accused of Unholy Crime

Sources say she's battling a gambling problem

When people think of nuns, grand larceny probably isn’t one of the things that come to mind.

However, Sister Mary Anne Rapp is facing charges in Orleans County, N.Y., for stealing $100,000 from two churches, the Buffalo News notes.

The nun is described as about 50-years-old and a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity’s Holy Name Province.

The local district attorney says his office was tipped off to the nun’s alleged crimes by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.

Unnamed sources said the nun had previously been treated for a gambling problem and that the missing funds were donations made by parishoners. She had been placed on administrative leave after internal church audits revealed “irregularities.”

The district attorney indicated that this was the first time he’d ever prosecuted a nun.
