Online Home Rental Site Airbnb Waives Fees for Sandy Victims

With the Middle Atlantic states still reeling from the impact of Hurricane Sandy, travel home-rental firms are taking steps to help travelers dealing with local disruptions.

People renting homes in New York City, Long Island’s Hamptons, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Providence, Rhode Island, through start-up company Airbnb, for seven nights or less, will see fees for the service waived, the Associated Press said.

Airbnb is also asking home owners who rent out their residences through the service to consider reducing their rental fees and provide assistance for those displaced by Sandy.

While Airbnb is cutting fees, Uber, which finds drivers for people who need car rides, its paying $100,000 to drivers listed on its service in Sandy-affected areas, after encountering a Twitter backlash over price increases for customers in the hurricane’s path.

Though the money paid to drivers was meant to head off further prices increases for customers and more backlash, Uber said it was only a temporary measure.
