Giant retailer Walmart (NYSE:WMT) is hoping to make more inroads in higher-end foods through a new mail-order food business.
For a subscription price of $7 per month, customers can have a box of 5 to 8 sample-sized items mailed to them. The products will be hand-picked and can contain items not available on Walmart shelves. November’s samples include, for instance, wine biscuits, white cheddar popcorn and dark chocolate-infused Quinoa bars.
The company has set up a website for the service, www.goodies.co. Customers can sign up there and, if they like any of the samples, order standard-sized versions of the items.
The site also will host customer reviews of products, and those who give reviews can earn loyalty points that can be redeemed for items in the store.
Walmart hopes to use the service not only to boost product awareness, but also to help it identify early food trends.
