Russian Nuclear Attack Sub Spotted Off East Coast

RussiaPromo Russian Nuclear Attack Sub Spotted Off East Coast[1]In an echo of Cold War military maneuvers, a Russian nuclear submarine has been reported patrolling within 200 miles of the U.S. East Coast[2].

Identified as a Russian Sierra-2 class attack submarine, the vessel is equipped with various anti-submarine missiles and torpedoes, designed to engage American submarines, the Cleveland Leader noted.

The appearance of the submarine off the Atlantic Coast marks the first time that class of Russian submarines have been detected so near to American shores.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990′s, the Russian military generally retreated from the international scene. However, in recent years, Russian leader Vladamir Putin has sought to restore Russia’s reputation as a world power by making a show it its remaining military might.

While a Russian submarine’s presence off the U.S. coast may be an uncomfortable reminder of past tensions, military experts said the ship was in international waters and presented no real threat to the U.S., which maintains an ample submarine fleet of its own.
