Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Better Supply: A Sterne Agee analyst says that iPhone 5 production capacity is improving and that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will sell 46.5 million iPhones during the current quarter, AppleInsider notes. The analyst’s comments came after Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn, admitted that it was having problems meeting consumer demand for the latest iPhone due to its complexity. There have been persistent rumors that the phone’s in-cell touchscreens have proven hard for Asian manufacturers to mass produce. The iPhone 5 hit stores on September 21. AT&T blamed lower-than-expected third-quarter subscriber growth on tight iPhone 5 inventories.
Coming Here: Foxconn, the Taiwan-based manufacturer of many Apple products, is considering building manufacturing facilities in the U.S., DigiTimes reports. The company is currently looking at Los Angeles and Detroit as possible locations for LCD TV production plants. Apple devices, however, would not be manufactured in the U.S. due to their complexity, the report noted. Yesterday, Foxconn chairman Terry Guo said that Foxconn was discussing a partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to bring American engineers to its factories in Taiwan and China to participate in the design and production of various products.
Video Judgement: A federal jury in Texas has ruled that Apple violated patents held by VirnetX (AMEX:VHC) and awarded the company $368.2 million in damages, Bloomberg notes. The patents in question relate to technology that facilitates the creation of virtual networks using domain-name services. VirnetX has sued a number of other companies, including Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) over alleged patent infringement. It agreed to a $200 million settlement with Microsoft two years ago. Apple, which contends that it uses a different technology in its FaceTime video-calling application, can still appeal the decision, but has not indicate what action it will take.
