Thursday Apple Rumors: Shortages May Delay New iMac Launch

daily apple rumors 300x180 Thursday Apple Rumors: Shortages May Delay New iMac Launch[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Desktop Problems: The updated iMacs that were unveiled last month by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) CEO Tim Cook at a special media event may not be available to consumers in time for the holiday shopping season[4], AppleInsider notes. The iMacs were supposed to hit store shelves in November and December, but now could be delayed until next year. Cook had warned of a “significant shortage’ of the super-thin iMacs during an October conference call with investors. That warning is echoed in a report from France that says that Apple’s manufacturing partners are having difficulty welding the all-in-one computers’ aluminum assemblies and laminating their LCD displays. Despite the rumors, the company’s website continues to list the 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs for November and December launch, respectively. Apple has also faced manufacturing problems with its super-slim iPhone 5. Its Asian manufacturing partner, Foxconn, recently admitted that it was having trouble meeting demand for the new phone because it was hard to build.

Not Covered: Apple is facing Europe-wide investigations over allegations that its Apple Care warranty service is making misleading claims[5], IDG News notes. The European Union Justice Commissioner has written to all 27 member nations requesting their regulators to examine Apple’s warranties for possible violations of consumer law. Apple has stopped selling its Apple Care package in Italy after being hit with a $1.15 million fine by the Italian government, which accused the company of promoting its own paid warranty coverage while failing to provide consumers with information about warranty coverage mandated by Italian law.

Mini Heist: Thieves have made off with 3,600 iPad Minis valued at $1.5 million from JFK Airport in New York City[6], the New York Post notes. The smaller-screen iPads were looted from a cargo storage facility at the airport by thieves who used forklifts to load the iPads into a waiting truck. The robbery wasn’t a complete success. A passing airport worker questioned the thieves, who departed immediately, leaving three pallets of iPad Minis behind. The new iPad Minis had just been shipped from China for distribution to retailers in the U.S. Ironically, the theft occurred at the same cargo facility made famous by the theft of $5 million in cash and $900,000 in jewels in December 1978, allegedly by members of the Luchese crime family.
