Winners chosen out of 12 popular toys

The choices were made by a national selection committee for the Toy Hall of Fame, located in Rochester, N.Y. The two beat out other classics including Lite-Brite, Magic 8 Ball and Twister.

Star Wars action figures won the award for their long-term ability to engage the attention of children. Plus, they expanded the already-epic scale of the Star Wars movies in an imaginative way.

Dominoes, the committee argued, are an iconic form of entertainment. For centuries, people around the world have been playing with the small rectangles.

Anyone can nominate a toy for the Hall. A group from the museum then cuts the list down to twelve finalists. Once the finalists are determined, each member of the selection committee chooses two and writes an essay about why each should be inducted. The toys selected must be popular for generations and must stimulate child development.
