daily apple rumors 300x180 Tuesday Apple Rumors: Apple Stores Top Sales Per Square Foot[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Still On Top: Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) retail stores generate the most sales per square foot of any other retail chain[4], CNET notes. A study from industry research firm RetailSails compared more than 200 retail chains operating in 15 sectors. According to the study, Apple Stores produce $6,050 in revenue per square foot, up from $5,626 per square foot last year. By contrast, the second ranked chain, Tiffany‘s (NYSE:TIF[5]) recorded just $3,017 in revenue per square foot. While Apple Stores generated the most sales per square foot of retail space, Costco (NASDAQ:COST[6]) stores generated the highest revenue per store. By that measure, Apple ranked ninth, while big box electronics retailer Best Buy (NYSE:BBY[7]) dropped out of the top ten on this year’s list.

Key Shift: Text messaging is in decline[8] due to Apple’s iMessage and other IP messaging services, CNET notes. A report finds that the number of text messages transmitted and revenue generated through text messaging fell for the first time in Western nations last quarter. Apple’s iMessage permits users to send messages to any other iOS device without incurring text messaging charges.

Team Effort: Some Apple employees will now be allowed to set aside time to work on special projects[9], AppleInsider notes. The practice has long been a mainstay at other technology companies, including mobile device rival Google (NASDAQ:GOOG[10]), which lets key workers spend as much as one day a week working on side projects that could produce technology breakthroughs. Under an initiative known as “Blue Sky,” Apple will now permit certain employees to take two-weeks away from their assigned duties to assist with projects outside of their normal activities. The practice was introduced by CEO Tim Cook earlier this year and is meant to help deflect efforts to poach top level talent by increasing company loyalty.
