daily apple rumors 300x180 Tuesday Apple Rumors: Apple to Replace Intel Chips in Macs[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Chip Switch: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) is preparing to dump Intel (NASDAQ:INTC[4]) processors from its Macs and iMacs[5], eWeek says. The company will replace Intel chips with processors designed by ARM (NASDAQ:ARMH[6]), which licenses its technology to chip manufacturers like Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM[7]). Apple switched from IBM‘s (NYSE:IBM[8]) PowerPC chips to Intel processors in 2005 for its personal computers. The change over to ARM processors will likely take several years, as Apple would need time to customize the chips to work efficiently with its operating system. Adopting ARM chips in its desktop machines hints at a strategy that would ultimately unify the company’s mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad with its Mac computers for an integrated computing experience.

Market Tumble: A profusion of new tablets running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[9]) Android operating system has cut Apple’s share of the tablet market[10] to 50%, CBS says. A study released by industry research firm IDC found that Apple retained a 50.4% share of the market in the third quarter, followed by Samsung, whose share more than doubled to 18.4% and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN[11]) who grabbed 9% of the tablet market. Previously, Apple’s share of the tablet market had been greater than 60%. However, analysts noted that Apple was likely to recover market share in the current quarter after the release of the new iPad Mini and an updated standard-sized iPad, which hit stores last month. During the third quarter, Apple shipped 14 million iPads, up 26% from the same time last year.

No Trial: A federal judge in Wisconsin has dismissed a patent lawsuit filed by Apple[12] against Google’s Motorola unit, Fox News notes. Apple sued Google over allegedly excessive licensing fees for patented wireless technology. The patents, which cover Wi-Fi connectivity are part of industry standards and patent holders are obligated to charge on “reasonable” licensing fees. The judge dismissed the case without disclosing a reason for her decision.
