A man died after tangling with employees at a Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) store in Lithonia, Ga., over the weekend.
The unidentified man was confronted in the store’s parking lot by two Wal-Mart employees and a contracted security guard on suspicion that he had stolen two DVD players. A physical struggle ensued during which the man may have been placed in a head lock, The Atlanta Journal Constitution noted.
When police arrived, they found the Wal-Mart employees “on top” of the man, who was unresponsive and “bleeding from his mouth and nose.” He was transported to a local hospital, where physicians could not revive him.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson said the company was cooperating with police and that merchandise was not “worth someone’s life.” The company said its personnel were trained to avoid potentially risky confrontations with shoppers.
The security guard is no longer working for the store, and the two Wal-Mart employees have been placed on paid suspension during the investigation, the company said.
