Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Growing Presence: Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones accounted for 5.5% of all mobile phones sales during the third quarter, AppleInsider noted. Figures compiled by industry research firm Gartner show that 428 million mobile phones were sold during the quarter, down 3.1% from the same time last year. Smartphone sales, however, jumped 47%. In the third quarter of last year, iPhones accounted for 3.9% of all mobile phones sold. Other phone-makers like Samsung and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) also produce lower-end mobile devices that boost their overall percentage of the market. Samsung phones represented 22.9% of all mobile phones sold during the quarter. Nokia phones accounted for 19.2%. Together, Apple and Samsung grabbed 46.5% of total smartphone sales. Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) placed third in smartphone sales, followed by HTC.
No Truce: Apple’s recent licensing deal with HTC won’t serve as a model for Samsung in its patent infringement litigation with Apple, PCWorld notes. Samsung said today that it will not negotiate with Apple over disputed patents and intends to continue the fight in courts around the world. Apple won a $1 billion jury award against Samsung in August, but that has been challenged by the Samsung, which claims that the jury foreman was biased. Apple has also lost a number of patent and design infringement actions against Samsung in other jurisdictions.
New Option: Nokia has launched a new maps application for iOS devices, ComputerWorld notes. The struggling Finnish handset maker, whose sales have been heavily dented by rising sales of Apple’s iPhone and smartphones using Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system, is hoping it can leverage its map technology to provide a more advanced navigational app than Apple’s new in-house map app. That app, which replaced Google Maps on iOS in September, drew heavy criticism from users over errors and glitches. Nokia’s HERE app features voice-guided walking directions and mass-transit guidance as well as driving directions.
