Realizing that employers are now searching out information on applicants prior to interviewing, schools such as Johns Hopkins and Syracuse University are now offering students systems that optimize their online profile, the Associated Press reports. The party pictures and other memories of student life are still present online — nothing will get rid of them — but information and images that will benefit the graduate can be positioned at the top of the search results.
The process is an extension of online reputation-management businesses that have appeared over the last few years. Originally costing hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars, the price has been steadily dropping as the market fills up. Now, the universities are offering it for free to help get their graduates into the workforce without any problems.
Lisa Severy of the National Career Development Association told the Associated Press: “We call it the grandma test — if you don’t want her to see it, you probably don’t want an employer to, either.”
