Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) won’t be changing its name. The cable and media giant mulled taking on a new name over the last year after it acquired a controlling interest in NBC Universal from General Electric (NYSE:GE), the Philadelphia Inquirer notes.
Named by its founder, Ralph Roberts, who combined the words “communications” and “broadcast,” Comcast considered changing its name as a way to rebrand the company as it expanded beyond its pay-TV roots.
In the end, however, Comcast executives decided to keep the old name, but added the NBC Peacock to its logo. The iconic peacock will be positioned directly over the Comcast name.
Unveiled on Monday by CEO Brian Roberts, the new logo was first shown to 275 employees at the Saturday Night Live Studio at NBC’s New York City headquarters. NBC News anchor Brian Williams was on hand for the new logo’s debut. After years of declining TV ratings, NBC has battled back this season with a new slate of popular shows.
The company’s cable, Internet and subscription TV service will retain its Xfinity name, but the new peacock-enhanced logo will soon appear on company vehicles.
In August, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) revamped its long-time logo.
Shares of Comcast slipped fractionally in Wednesday morning trading.
