FedEx vs. UPS: Which Is the Better Package?

Dubbed “Green Monday,” the second Monday is December is the day when online purchases made on Cyber Monday enter the shipping chain for delivery to recipients. It is also the day when many procrastinating gift givers turn to shippers like FedEx and UPS (NYSE:UPS) to send gifts in hope of pre-Christmas arrival.

Last year, U.S. consumers spent $1.1 billion on Green Monday.

With competition rising among retailers, free shipping options are being offered later and later into the season. This year, 1,000 retailers will offer free shipping for online purchases made on December 17.

The rising popularity of online shopping and the free shipping option is expected to boost the number of packages delivered by FedEx between Thanksgiving and Christmas to 280 million, a 13% increase over last year.

Shares of FedEx and UPS both rose about 1% in Monday midday trading.
