The mother of Modern Family actress Ariel Winter is suing a friend of the young star for defamation.
The mother, Chrisoula Workman, is suing actor Matthew Borlenghi over a comment she says he posted on the Los Angeles Times’ website, the Associated Press reports. The comment accuses Workman of being an “abusive monster.” Workman denies the charges and, in the suit, claims Borlenghi defamed her and damaged her reputation.
Workman temporarily lost custody of Winters — who plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family and has appeared in other TV shows and movies — because of allegations that she had been emotionally and physically abusing the young actress. A final decision on custody will be decided in a trial set to begin Wednesday.
Custody of Winters is held by her older sister, Shanelle Gray. Gray owns a studio that employs Borlenghi. The actor did not confirm to the Associated Press whether the comment — made under a story about the actress and her mother’s accusations that she’s romantically involved with an 18-year-old man — was written by Borlenghi.
