For people who can’t get enough of The New York Times, its parent, The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT), is launching a line of mini e-books penned by the newspaper’s reporters.
The short e-books, called e-singles, run around 10,000 words and will be available through Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iBooks, Barnes & Noble‘s (NYSE:BKS) Nook and Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle store, the Associated Press noted.
Readers can purchase the iconic newspaper’s first e-single, an 18,000-word article, titled “Snow Fall” by Times reporter John Branch on Monday. Priced at $2.99, it will elaborate on an article that will appear in next week’s newspaper.
A New York Times editor said that the newspaper was experimenting with the new digital format and would release a variety of titles in the first year, including essays, narratives and possibly even collections, to see what interested consumers.
The move comes as the tablet market continues to explode, with industry watchers projecting sales of as many as 120 million tablets this year, growing to 340 million within four years. A recent study found that more than half of tablet owners use their devices as a platform to read or watch news content.
Shares of The New York Times Company rose fractionally in Friday morning trading.
