The New York Jets have a quarterback controversy after last weekend’s defeat by the Tennessee Titans.
In the wake of the loss, which ended any slim chance the team had of making the playoffs, Jets coach Rex Ryan announced that third-string quarterback Greg McElroy will start in next week’s game against the San Diego Chargers. Ryan’s decision, which benched former starting quarterback Matt Sanchez, will cause backup quarterback Tim Tebow to ask to traded or released by the team at the end of the season, the New York Daily News says.
Tebow joined the Jets earlier this year after the Denver Broncos traded him despite leading the Broncos to a run in the playoffs last year. Noted for leading the Broncos to a series of dramatic last-minute comebacks, as well as for his public display of religious fervor, Tebow has barely been used by the Jets during his time in New York.
Ryan’s decision to start McElroy, who has very limited playing time in NFL games, over Tebow is widely seen as a rebuke of Tebow’s capabilities, making his request to leave the team less than surprising.
