Peter Parker, who has been Spider-Man since the character’s creation in the early 1960s, is dead.
Disney-owned (NYSE:DIS) Marvel Comics killed the character is the most recent issue of Amazing Spider-Man, CNN reports. The issue, #700 of the series, is also the last. A new series, The Superior Spider-man, will begin in the new year.
The role of Spider-Man will be taken over by the character’s one-time arch-foe, Otto Octavius, better known as Doctor Octopus. Octavius, who was also the featured villain in the 2004 movie, Spider-Man 2, has taken Parker’s memories and powers and believes that he will be a better Spider-Man than Parker ever could have hoped to be.
Fan response has been strong. Series writer Dan Slott, who claims that the death of Parker is a permanent change to the series, has received death threat over the move. But Slott says fan response has moderated since the news of Parker’s death leaked earlier this month.
