Trendy apparel retailer Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) may have pushed its edgy image a bit too far this holiday season.
The company’s Christmas catalog, which is aimed at teenagers, features an array of products showing slogans that include various expletives. Conservative cultural critics are not amused, Fox News notes.
The catalog is especially fond of a particular four-letter expletive, whose variations grace the titles of photo albums, t-shirts, books and even candles. If that wasn’t enough to get you in the holiday spirit, Urban Outfitters is also selling a mug and wrapping paper that appends a derogatory reference to women to the end of “Merry Christmas.”
The American Family Association, a conservative activist group, decried the obscene words, but noted it wasn’t the first time Urban Outfitters had used profanity in its products.
Marketing experts noted that expletives are becoming increasingly common in everyday American conversation, particularly among teenagers. They doubted the company would experience any significant consumer reaction to the catalog.
Shares of Urban Outfitters fell almost 1% in Wednesday midday trading.
