The Vatican, coming off the success of Pope Benedict’s first tweet, would like everyone to know that the world is not going to end next week.
Director of the Vatican Observatory Rev. Jose Funes wrote in L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s official newspaper, that doomsday predictions based on the Mayan calendar are “not even worth discussing,” The Associated Press reports.
Questions about the Mayan calendar, which some think ends this year, have swirled around the world for years. Doomsday predictors claim that, since the calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012, the world will end that day.
Funes went on to write that, while the universe is expanding, there is no possibility that the world will end next week. Even if it did, however, Funes says that for Christians, “death can never have the last word.”
