Clicking on movie titles that don’t feature cover art images has sent users to websites featuring explicit pornography, the BBC notes.

Users who click on movie links only to find themselves confronted by images from porn films cannot rent or purchase the pornography. In fact, iTunes will permit users to rent or purchase the actual non-pornographic titles named, but not pictured, in the iTunes listings.

Technical experts speculated that the pornographic links were inserted by error as Apple rushed to ready iTunes for its Russian debut, which happened on Tuesday.  Lacking cover art images for some films, iTunes staff inserted links to xxx.xxx as placeholders for proper image links that would be added later.

Unfortunately for iTunes, the .xxx domain was approved for pornographic use in 2011, so adding links to that domain actually sent users to explicit websites. Experts said Apple simply had to delete the erroneous links.

Still, one analyst said the incident represented a “serious blunder” for the iPhone and iPad maker, and was the “sloppy” result of inadequate software testing prior to the store’s launch.

Shares of Apple slipped more than 1% in pre-market trading on Thursday.
