10 Words or Phrases You Better Not Say in 2013

Everyone has a list of words that they are simply tired of hearing or worn-out catch phrases that have been so overused that they are in desperate need of permanent retirement.

For almost four decades Lake Superior State University (LSSU) has released an annual list of such words and phrases, compiled from nominations received from the general public throughout the course of a year.

Merriam-Webster’s Most Looked-Up Words for 2012

The first list was issued on New Year’s Day 1976. In the succeeding years, the school has banned the further use of 800 words or phrases.

Here are ten words and phrases that the scholars at LSSU insist you should not use in 2013:

1. Fiscal Cliff
2. Kick the can down the road
3. Double down
4. Job creators/creation
5. Passion/passionate
6. YOLO – “You only live once”
7. Spoiler alert
8. Bucket list
9. Trending
10. Superfood
