Airlines Ground Entire Fleet of Boeing 787s

dreamliner 787 interior Airlines Ground Entire Fleet of Boeing 787s[1]In a public blow for Boeing (NYSE:BA[2]), All Nippon Airways (PINK:ALNPY[3]) and Japan Airlines have grounded all of their new 787 Dreamliner jets after a series of incidents raised questions about the plane’s safety[4]. Boeing shares dropped more than 3% on the news in early Wednesday trading.

On Wednesday, an All Nippon Airways flight made an emergency landing in Japan after pilots detected the odor of something burning in the cockpit and warning system showed a problem with the battery. Passengers were evacuated from the aircraft using emergency slides, the Associated Press noted.

After the incident the two Japanese airlines alerted regulators that they were removing their 787 Dreamliners from service immediately. Both airlines are among the first of Boeing’s worldwide customers to receive the new high-tech jets, which feature composite material airframes.

In recent weeks, several 787 Dreamliners have experienced problems, including fuel leaks, computer errors, and a fire in an auxillary power unit[5] of a Japan Airlines jet at Boston’s Logan Airport. Japan Airlines has seven 787 Dreamliners in operation, while All Nippon Airlines has 14 Dreamliners.

An aviation expert noted that new aircraft often experience problems after entering service. Japan is experiencing more problems with the new 787 since almost half the planes currently in service are operating by Japanese airlines.
