The new appearance comes just before a merger decision

The new design is the first change in appearance for the firm since 1968, the Dallas Morning News reports. The new logo features the name of the carrier with a blue and red slash separated by an eagle’s head.

This comes just weeks before the firm must decide on a proposed merger with US Airways Group (NYSE:LCC). American Airlines CEO Tim Horton said US Airways had no input into the design of the new logo.

“We are competitors today, so we didn’t think it appropriate to discuss it with them. I will tell you that on my drive home last night [Wednesday], I called my good friend Doug Parker and informed him of what we were doing as a courtesy,” Horton is quoted in the Dallas Morning News. Parker is chairman and CEO of US Airways.

The decision to roll out the new look came this week because the firm’s newest plane, a 777-300ER, needed to be painted before it went into service.
