County Kerry, Ireland, has decided that being slightly drunk and driving is permissible.
Officials in Kerry voted in favor of a law that would allow rural residents to legally drive after “two or three” drinks, reports Mediabistro. The officials have concerns that without such a law, county residents who are far from towns and pubs would be isolated and unable to participate in Ireland’s traditional “pub culture.”
Councillor Danny Healy-Rae said, “people are living in isolated rural areas where there’s no public transport of any kind, and they end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don’t want to take the risk of losing their licence.” Irish drunk-driving laws are notoriously harsh on offenders.
The motion has not yet become law. The Irish Minister for Justice Alan Shatter still must accept it.
