Top-ranked professional golfer Rory McIlroy is the newest spokesman for Nike (NYSE:NKE).
The firm revealed the sponsorship on Monday at an event in the United Arab Emirates, where the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is being held this week, CBS Sports reports. The event featured a hologram of McIlroy swinging a club and a video of other Nike sponsors — such as Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Wayne Rooney — welcoming him on board.
Details of the deal were not announced by Nike. Estimates place it in the $20 million-per-year range and could total as much as $200 million over the life of the deal. McIlroy will wear the company’s apparel and use its equipment, as well as appear in ads. His first commercial, entitled No Cup Is Safe, also features Tiger Woods and begins running Wednesday.
Nike Golf president Cindy Davis said of McIlroy, “He is the epitome of a Nike athlete, and he is joining our team during the most exciting time in Nike Golf’s history. We are looking forward to partnering with him to take his remarkable career to the next level.”
