daily apple rumors AAPL[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Cutting Back: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) has slashed orders for iPhone 5 components in the face of weak demand[4], NBCNews notes. Apple is asking for fewer LCD screens from Japan Displays, Sharp (PINK:SHCAY[5]) and LG Displays (NYSE:LPL[6]), reducing its orders by about 50%. Apple had initially ordered 65 million LCD displays for the January to March quarter. Other iPhone part orders were also trimmed. The iPhone 5 was released in September, but manufacturing problems constrained supplies for months. The component order cuts were seen as confirmation that iPhone 5 sales haven’t lived up to expectations and that Apple continues to lose ground to rival Samsung in the smartphone market.

Style Book: The nation’s first all-digital book library is being designed to resembled an Apple Store[7], CNET notes. Currently under construction in Bexar County, Texas, BiblioTech will open this fall, offering patrons e-readers loaded with digital books that may be borrowed for two week periods. County officials said the building’s interior was based on the layout and appearance of an Apple Store. The library will have about 100 e-readers for borrowing. Bexar County is spending $250,000 to license the first 10,000 e-book titles. No physical books will be present in the new library. The county expects to open additional, all-digital libraries in the future.

Contradictions: Industry research firm Gartner says that Mac shipments during the holiday quarter[8] increased 5% over last year, AppleInsider noted. Gartner’s analysis runs counter to rival research firm IDC, which announced last week that Mac shipments fell 0.2% over last year during the quarter. According to Gartner, Mac shipments in the U.S. rose 5.4% during the holiday quarter, while shipments of PCs fell 2.1%. Apple machines accounted for 12.3% of personal computer shipments during the holiday quarter, up from 11.4% in 2011. Apple will announced its quarterly sales data next week.
