Restaurant Trend: Pizza … for Breakfast!

According to a new study, pizza is becoming a popular item on menus across America … for breakfast.

The study, done by firm Dataessential, shows that 5% of the chain and independent restaurants it tracks now serve some form of breakfast pizza, Nation’s Restaurant News is reporting. That’s up 18% from a similar report in 2008.

The study indicates that it’s mostly independent restaurants that offer breakfast pizza — typically something without marinara or tomato sauce. However, fast-food chain Sbarro has offered a breakfast pizza with bacon, sausage, eggs and mozzarello at the firm’s 611 stores and BJ’s (NASDAQ:BJRI) , a 115-unit casual dining chain, offers one with an omelet on top of marinara and mozzarella.

A notable standout is the Domino’s (NYSE:DPZ) franchise in Dayton, Oh. That location, near the University of Dayton, has offered breakfast pizza since 2010. A spokesman for the chain said no other Domino’s store offers a breakfast pizza and that the chain had no plans to market any.
