A new study finds that some autistic children may shed that diagnosis as they go through their school years.
Published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, the study isn’t considered conclusive, the BBC reports. It included 112 children accurately reported as being autistic at the National Institutes of Health. Thirty-four children who were diagnosed as autistic in early childhood went on to function at the same level as their peers in school.
Both cognitive and observational tests shows that the children were indistinguishable from others. They showed no language, communication or other disorder related to autism.
NIH Director Dr. Thomas Insel says of the study, “Although the diagnosis of autism is not usually lost over time, the findings suggest that there is a very wide range of possible outcomes. Subsequent reports from this study should tell us more about the nature of autism and the role of therapy and other factors in the long term outcome for these children.”
