A New Mexico teen is accused of killing his family and planning to kill people at a local Walmart (NYSE:WMT).
The boy, Nehemiah Griego, allegedly planned his assault for at least a week, The Washington Post is reporting. Authorities say it was his alleged hope that after he began shooting in the store, he could engage in a firefight with police who would kill him.
Griego was timing the shootings to coincide with the “Guns Across America” event that was a response to President Barack Obama’s announcement of gun control efforts in the wake of the Newtown school shootings.
After allegedly killing his family, Griego may have planned to killed his girlfriend’s family as well. Following the shooting, he texted a photo of his dead mother to the girl and spent the day with her and her family. After leaving them, he went the church where his father was pastor and later confessed to the killings.
Griego is under arrest for murder and will be tried as an adult. No decision has been made about whether to arrest the girlfriend.
