Third Time’s No Charm for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

[1]A series of problems with the 787 Dreamliner is causing headaches for aircraft maker Boeing (NYSE:BA[2]).
Three events in less than one week have led to concerns about the safety of Boeing’s newest aircraft, CNN reports[3]. There were two incidents in Boston — the first a small fire caused by an exploding battery, the second a fuel leak. The third happened in Japan, where a crew was falsely alerted to a braking problem by the airplane’s warning system.
The three incidents are contributing to a growing sense unease about the Dreamliner.
Boeing has a lot riding on the success of the Dreamliner, The New York Times reports[4]. The plane — the first commercial jet to be made with a lightweight composite structure instead of metal — is supposed to be the first in a new generation of aircraft made using modern manufacturing processes. Boeing delivered 46 of the planes last year and hopes to deliver 10 per month throughout 2013.
The problems this week don’t represent serious issues; instead, it’s that the problems are occurring on top of one another that concerns Boeing — and that they’re coming after serious production issues that delayed initial deliveries by three years.
Boeing shares were down over 2% Tuesday on the news, though were set to rebound slightly in Wednesday premarket trading.
