Tuesday Apple Rumors: iPhone Maintains U.S. Smartphone Lead

Edge: Data released by Kantar Worldpanel indicated that Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones accounted for the majority of U.S. smartphone sales during the fourth quarter of last year, AppleInsider notes. The industry research firm found that iPhones comprised 51.2% of all smartphones sold in the U.S. during the holiday quarter, up from 44.9% during the same period in 2011. Smartphones running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system saw their market share shrink slightly from 44.8% in the fourth quarter of 2011, to 44.2% last year. Smartphones from Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) tumbled from 6.1% of sales, to just 1.1%. Kantar Worldpanel found that 19% of iPhone sales last year came from former Android users, compared to 9% in the prior year.

Mini Rival: Samsung is preparing to launch a smaller tablet computer to be called the Note 8.0, aimed at Apple’s iPad Mini, Technorati notes. The new tablet will debut at the Mobile World Conference in February. It is expected to have a similar form to the iPad Mini and come with 16GB and 32GB memory options, as well as a microSD slot allowing users to add their own memory. The tablet is also expected to have WiFi and cellular connectivity, a 5 megapixel front camera and a 1.3 megapixel rear-facing camera. In addition to the iPad Mini, the Note 8.0 will compete with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Fire tablets.

Sentenced: Kariem McFarlin, who was arrested for breaking into the late Steve Jobs’ Palo Alto, California, home will spend seven years in prison for his crimes, IDG News Service notes. Police nabbed McFarlin in August after Apple traced his location using signals from the Apple devices he stole from the residence. The home was under renovation when McFarlin broke in. No one was injured during the burglary. Under questioning after his arrest, McFarlin confessed to breaking into Jobs’ home, as well as several other area homes.
