Martin Luther King Jr 9365086 1 402 300x300 What's Open, Closed on Martin Luther King Day[1]A new survey shows that fewer than half the country’s organizations will shut down for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Conducted by Bloomberg BNA[2], the survey shows that, 30 years after the holiday was enacted, only 32% of employers will grant employees the day off. That’s up 1% from last year.

While the federal government will be shut down, including post offices and other official locations, many businesses will remain open. The stock market will also be closed for the holiday. More than 50% of nonbusiness employers give MLK Day as a paid holiday, while only 7% of manufacturing firms do.

There’s also a distinct difference in the holiday for those with union representation. If a firm has a union working with it, 38% give the day off. If it’s nonunion, only 30% do so.
