More than 3,800 flights had been canceled by Friday morning.┬áNew York’s John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports each saw more than 500 flights canceled as the storm bore down on the region, Bloomberg noted.

A number of airlines will waive penalties for passengers who have to switch flights due to the storm. Delta (NYSE:DAL[3]) had canceled 740 flights by Friday morning, while United (NYSE:UAL[4]) had canceled 900, JetBlue (NASDAQ:JBLU[5]) had canceled 640, and American Airlines (PINK:AAMRQ[6]) had canceled 450 flights.

The first snow flakes began falling in New York City early on Friday morning. However, most forecasts predict that Boston will see the highest snow totals, with more than two feet expected to accumulate in the city by Saturday afternoon. Boston’s mass transit system, which includes buses, subways and commuter trains will shut down at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

High winds are anticipated to accompany the storm, raising the chance of downed power-lines and electrical outages across the region.
