A protest by environmental activists outside the White House on Wednesday led to the arrest of more than four dozen people, including several celebrities.
The protest was organized by the Sierra Club in a bid to pressure President Barack Obama to block the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada 1,700 miles south to U.S. refineries on the Gulf Coast, The New York Times noted.
The Sierra Club has decried the proposed pipeline as incompatible with efforts to reduce greenhouse gases emitted by engines powered by fossil fuels.
Authorized by the Sierra Club’s board to commit acts of civil disobedience, protesters used zip-ties to attach themselves to the White House fence and defied police instructions to leave. Among those arrested were actress Daryl Hannah, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., civil rights activist Julian Bond, environmentalist author Bill McKibben and Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune.
The protesters were later released after posting $100 bonds.
This marks the second time Hannah has been arrested while protesting the pipeline. In October, she was arrested for criminal trespass for standing in front of some heavy equipment and refusing to orders to move in Winnsboro, Texas, through which part of the pipeline will pass.
The pipeline has been a focal point for wrangling between Democrats and Republicans. Last year, the Republicans failed to advance legislation to begin its construction.
