Star Wars fans will have even more big screen space opera goodness to look forward to in coming years than previously announced.
In addition to a new trilogy of films, the first of which will hit theaters in 2015, Disney (NYSE:DIS) is preparing to make an unspecified number of standalone movies set in the Star Wars universe, the Daily News notes.
That word comes from Disney CEO Bob Iger, who said that the standalone movies will be released during the six year period during which the new trilogy will also hit theater screens.
More enticing to hardcore Star Wars fans, Iger noted that Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the screenplay of The Empire Strikes Back, will be involved in the new standalone movies.
Last month, Disney confirmed that J.J. Abrams, the director of the recent Star Trek reboot, and creator of TV’s Fringe, will direct the first film of the new triology.
Disney acquired the rights to the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas in a $4 billion deal late last year.
Shares of Disney rose more than 1% in Wednesday afternoon trading.
