On Wednesday, federal agents raided properties belonging to The Scooter Store as part of an investigation into possible Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
The headquarters and other offices of the powered wheelchair and scooter distributor were searched by as many as 150 officers from a variety of state and federal agencies, including the FBI, Texas’ Medicaid Fraud Control office, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the Inspector General, the San Antonio Express noted.
In 2012, the government calculated that from 2009 to 2011, The Scooter Score was overpaid between $46.8 million and $87.7 million by Medicare. The company contested that estimate and ultimately agreed to repay $19.5 million over five years, sparking an inquiry from two U.S. senators, who wanted to know why the government accepted such a low repayment.
Company officials sent an email to employees saying that The Scooter Store was cooperating with the investigation.
Investigators remained at the company’s offices on Thursday, sifting through billing and computer data.
