Giant Eagle Ends Grocery Reward Program

Foodperks program stops offering discounts on food

giant eagle Giant Eagle Ends Grocery Reward ProgramPittsburgh-based grocery chain Giant Eagle is ending its Foodperks discount program.

The chain has offered cardholders a 1% discount on grocery purchases for every 10 gallons of gasoline bought at the chain’s line of GetGo gas stations, The Pittsburch Post-Gazette reports. However, customer feedback showed it was confusing and not being used.

While the grocery discounts are ending, the other half of the program, Fuelperks, will continue. Cardholders will still earn discounts on gasoline at GetGo when buying food at Giant Eagle. For every $50 spent on groceries, cardholders receive 10 cents off each gallon of gas. In addition, cardholders will also receive an additional three-cent discount on gas when they don’t use their Fuelperks benefits.

To soften the blow, the chain sent letters to Foodperks users giving them $20 in store coupons, a free 7-inch sub at GetGo stores and an extra 25-cent-per-gallon discount on their next Fuelperks use. The last day that members will earn food credit will be Feb. 13, 2013. Discounts must be used by March 31, 2013, or be lost.
