[1]A private organization may be planning a manned trip to Mars within this decade.
The group – the Inspiration Mars Foundation – announced a press conference for next week to discuss plans for a trip to the red planet and back, reports CNN[2]. Called “Mission for America”, the trip is planned to launch Jan. 2018.
While the organization’s mission statement says that it is “committed to accelerating America’s human exploration of space as a critical catalyst for future growth, national prosperity, new knowledge and global leadership,” at no point does the release say that the trip will be manned.
Backing the organization is millionaire Dennis Tito. Long a space enthusiast, Tito gained fame more than 10 years ago when he spent $20 million to become the first space tourist by visiting the International Space Station.
