Meteor Injures 500 in Russia

russia meteor Meteor Injures 500 in RussiaA meteor blazed across the sky above the Urals in Russia today, then exploded.

It came in above the town of Chelyabinsk, reports CBS News. The town — about 930 miles east of Moscow — was peppered with small fragments of the object, and windows were shattered following the large explosion in the sky.

Reports from the area are still confused. Different government agencies are reporting the event as either a single meteor or a full-scale meteor shower.

More than 500 people were injured in the event, most by shards of glass from broken windows, 34 of whom were hospitalized.

Another celestial event, Asteroid 2012 DA14 is due to pass close to the Earth today. Experts say this one won’t strike the planet.
