Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Rental Share: Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes accounts for 45% of the market for online movie and TV show rentals, AppleInsider notes. While 72% of video on demand (VOD) movie purchases and rentals are purchased from cable or satellite television providers, digital downloads now comprise 16% of the VOD market. iTunes already has the largest share of digital movie downloads, but also has a significant lead over its rivals for digital rentals, according to industry research firm NPD. iTunes’ closest digital video rental competitor is Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Instant Video, which has 18% of the market, followed by Wal-Mart’s (NYSE:WMT) Vudu, which has 15%. Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) comes in fourth at 14%. Apple has been offering movie rentals through iTunes since 2008, and added TV show rentals in 2010.
New Appearance: Apple may be preparing to launch a major renovation of the user interfaces in OS X and iOS, Wired notes. The company has placed ads looking for senior software engineers to re-imaging user interfaces on its iLife suite, which is included on all OS X machines. The company is also looking to hire engineers to develop better dialog for its voice assistant Siri, which comes on the recent iOS devices. Taken together, Wired argues that the company is planning a operating system-wide interface overhaul. However, the debut of the new interface may be distant, since such overhauls take time to design and implement. Apple rolled out the last major OS X redesign in 2007. iOS hasn’t seen a significant re-design since its debut that year. Critics have noted the company’s failure to refresh iOS.
Sales Meeting: Last week, Apple’s Vice President of Education John Couch met with Turkish President Abdullah Gül and education officials to discuss a $4.5 billion program to buy iPads for the country’s school children, AppleInsider notes. The plan’s goal is to acquire up to 15 million iPads for use throughout Turkey’s educational system. Turkish officials complained about errors in the iPad’s current Turkish keyboard layout. Negotiations between Apple and Turkey are continuing.
