Tests by Stellenbosch University have discovered that meat in South Africa is commonly contaminated with other meats and materials, reports Agence France-Presse.
The tests showed that more than two-thirds of the samples had some sort of non-label ingredients in them. Among the items discovered in the search were goat meat, water buffalo meat, donkey meat and even plant material. The most common meat substitute, however, was chicken or pork for some other type of meat.
“Our study confirms that the mislabeling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts. Even though we have local regulations that protect consumers from being sold falsely described or inferior foodstuffs, we need these measures to be appropriately enforced,” said Louw Hoffman, an animal sciences professor.
