The program — developed to help pets survive their owner’s economic misfortunes — provides pet food for up to six months, reports Opposing Views.

The groups founder, Marc Okan, says that owners need to qualify by income to receive the pet food. Once the income is verified the owner’s will receive the pet food monthly from retailer Pet Food Direct. Okan says that more than 45,000 people have signed up for the stamps — which are based in New York City but available to pets all over the country — in the last two weeks.

Still, the Pet Food Stamps are provided through donations. Okan says, “We’re not looking for government funding at this point. Should the government be willing to provide assistance further down the line, we will look into it.”
