Michael McIntyre’s teacher, Karen Deverell, asked him to wear the shirt inside out or face suspension, reports The Christian Science Monitor. Deverell said the shirt’s pictures of guns violated the school’s dress code.

School district officials — who have subsequently apologized to McIntyre — say that’s not the case. The dress code does forbid violent imagery and anything related to gangs, but the armed forces are OK.

“We’ve been accused of a lot of things, but our middle school is well-known for its support of the armed forces,” district superintendent Joe Burgess said.

He also said that, while teachers do have the ability to question any clothing they think violates the district’s dress code, he wishes Deverell had checked with the district before she acted.
