Big Share: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) products comprised 20% of all consumer technology sales revenue in the U.S. last year, AppleInsider notes. That estimate was calculated by industry research firm NPD Group, which found that Apple devices represented 19.9% of U.S. electronics sales in 2012, up from 17.3% in 2011. Samsung ranked second, ringing up 9.3% of U.S. technology sales last year, compared to 7% in 2011. While Apple and Samsung saw their market share rise, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), Sony (NYSE:SNE) and Dell (NASDAQ:DELL), which round out the top five technology companies by U.S. sales, saw their market shares decline compared to previous years. Overall U.S. consumer electronics sales fell 2% last year.

Cyber Strike: Hackers recently infected Macintosh computers owned by some Apple employees, Reuters noted. The company said that the computers were infected with malware when their users viewed software development website that had also been infected. According to Apple, the malware had been designed to target Apple computers by exploiting a flaw in Oracle‘s (NASDAQ:ORCL) Java software. Similar malware was recently used to penetrate Facebook‘s (NASDAQ:FB) internal systems. Apple did not reveal the number of computers infected. Unnamed sources told Reuters that the malware that attacked Apple had been used to attack a number of U.S. defense contractors. Experts noted that hackers were now designing malware specifically to attack computers running Apple’s operating systems.

Gone: European consumers looking to buy a Mac Pro online are now out of luck, CNET notes. Apple has pulled the desktop computer from its online stores in Italy, Germany, France, Britain and a number of other European nations. Last month, Apple announced that due to new regulatory requirements, it would stop selling the machine in 27 European Union countries on March 1. Fans and communication ports on the Mac Pro do not comply with new European safety regulations. No other Apple device is affected by the regulatory changes. Apple is expected to release a new, and presumably compliant version of the Mac Pro in Europe this spring,. Mac Pros remain available on Apple’s online stores for non-European nations.
