Milestone: Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes music service recently downloaded its 25 billionth music track, USA TODAY notes. Apple launched the online music store in 2003. With the subsequent launches of the iPhone and iPad, iTunes expanded its retail offerings from just music to include books, magazines, movies and mobile apps. Currently, users download an average of 15,000 songs through iTunes every minute. Phillip Lüpke from Germany downloaded the 25 billionth song, Monkey Drums (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch. In addition to his song, Lüpke received  an iTunes Gift Card worth about $13,000.

Contenders: Though most media attention is focused on Apple’s latest generation iPhone 5, earlier models still available for sale continue to perform well, Forbes notes. Reports from Asia suggest that the iPhone 4S may have sold 20 million units during the holiday quarter. While discussing Apple’s quarterly results last month CEO Tim Cook noted that sales of the iPhone 4 remained strong and that supplies of the phone, which debuted in 2010, were constrained during the quarter. Apple sells the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S at a significant discount compared to the iPhone 5.

Missed Chance: Apple may be too late to block a Brazilian company’s use of the iPhone name, CNET notes. Late last year Gradiente unveiled a smartphone running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system, which it dubbed the iPhone. Unnamed inside sources say that the Brazilian Institute of Intellectual Property will give Gradiente an exclusive trademark to the iPhone brand in Brazil. Gradiente claims that it filed to trademark the iPhone name long before Apple introduced its iPhone in 2007. The trademark gives Gradiente rights to the name until 2018, but the company is reportedly ready to discuss a possible deal in which it would sell rights to the iPhone name to Apple. Last year, Apple paid $60 million to settle a lawsuit with a Chinese company over use of the iPad name in China.
