Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) found itself on the receiving end of online fury after shoppers noticed t-shirts with shocking slogans for sale on its U.K. website.
Users vented their wrath via Twitter over listings for t-shirts emblazoned with the words “Keep Calm and Rape On” and “Keep Calm and Hit Her.” Made by a U.S.-based company called Solid Gold Bomb, the shirts were promptly removed the the Internet retailing giant’s online store, CNN noted.
While the shirts were listed for sale, they were print-on-demand items, meaning that since none were sold, none were actually ever printed.
Solid Gold Bomb’s founder apologized for the shirts, saying that the slogans were computer-generated variants on the famed British WWII slogan, “Keep Calm and Carry On.” He said that the company would have squashed the slogans had anyone placed an order for them. The company currently lists 540,000 items on Amazon.
Nonetheless, a barrage of venom was directed at both Amazon and Solid Gold Bomb by outraged Twitter users.
Shares of Amazon climbed about 1% in Monday morning trading.
