Bezos — more famous as the CEO of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) — funded the project privately to recover the rockets, reports the Associated Press.

The three-week expedition is now bringing the engines back to Cape Canaveral. “We’ve seen an underwater wonderland – an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end,” Bezos wrote in an online post. The engines were located last year by Bezos’ team using radar and other imaging systems. At more than 3 miles down and 360 miles off the coast it was a challenge to bring them back.

After being used to launch the Apollo astronauts to the moon, the 18,000 pound engines were designed to fall into the ocean and be lost. With the recovery, one will be displayed at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC while the other will go to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, a NASA spokesman said.
